We’re looking for a new Editorial Director
We live, work and play on stolen Aboriginal lands. Sovereignty was never ceded: this land has always been, and always will be, Aboriginal land.
We’re on the hunt for a new Editorial Director!
Before we dive in, we want to note that unfortunately this is not a paid role. At Djed, we believe in the importance of paying creatives for their work: we’ve always operated under the idea that if we can’t afford to pay, we can’t afford to publish. Sadly we haven’t historically been able to afford applying that principle to Djed’s directors, but we’re working on ways to change that.
For now, we’re offering AUD$6000 to help cover expenses. Part of your role will be to work with the Managing Director to increase Djed’s overall funds and ensure payment for the management team in future.
Please note that Djed Press works exclusively with Blak (First Nations) and Black creatives and other creatives of colour. Only Bla(c)k creatives and other creatives of colour are eligible to apply.
We’re looking for someone with a real love of words, a passion for publishing, an inquisitive mind, and a good sense of social justice! If that sounds like you, make sure you read through all the info below, then send your expression of interest by hitting the link at the end of the pages.
If selected, you’ll be required to sign a Code of Conduct before starting, and you’ll have a 4-week handover and training period.
Applications close 23 August and you can be based anywhere in Australia.
What you’ll be doing:
- managing the email accounts (which mainly means replying to emails/queries from various stakeholders)
- managing the social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) and engaging with our audience
- evaluating, accepting or rejecting submissions; sending accepted submissions to the Submissions Editor; publishing edited pieces
- commissioning writers and illustrators where applicable
- creating and tracking publication schedules; tracking payments to be made
- staying up-to-date on current events, industry news, and opportunities to pass along
- working with the Managing Director to apply for grants, create partnerships and develop Djed’s long-term strategic direction.
You should:
- be familiar with the type of content Djed engages with, and familiar with our aims and values
- be able to commit to working 10-15 hours a week for at least six months
- have a basic working knowledge of social media; some knowledge of CMS (we use WordPress) would also be useful but we can train you on that
- have some editing, management, and/or admin experience
- It doesn’t need to be extensive – we’re not looking for 3+ years or anything here – but we are looking for someone who’s done this or something similar before.
- You don’t need a formal tertiary qualification – if you do have relevant tertiary qualifications let us know, but ultimately we’re more interested in who you are and what you can do.
Finally, as always, here’s a list of things that will result in automatic rejection:
- Racism
- Anti-blackness
- Anti-semitism, Islamophobia, religious intolerance of any kind
- Homophobia, transphobia, queerphobia of any kind
- Ableism
- Sexism/misogyny
- Work that goes against the concept of #ownvoices
